Callan Appleby from Castleford in Wakefield, is ready for his Caged Steel debut in Doncaster on March 14th. The 19-year-old fights out of FK Boxing Gym and brings a perfect 5–0 boxing record into March 14th. Now, he’s stepping from the ring into the cage – and he’s confident the result will be the same.
“I started boxing after I quit rugby,” Callan explains. “It began as a way to get fit with my mates, but I fell in love with it. I’ve stuck at it ever since. Five fights in, five wins. Now I’m coming to Caged Steel to go 6–0.”
For some fighters, changing environments can be a challenge. For Callan, it makes no difference.
“I’m not bothered where I’m fighting. Put me in a car park, put me anywhere. I’m not bothered.”
The mindset is simple. The objective doesn’t change.
Callan takes pride in where he’s from. Representing WF10 means something to him.
“I’ve grown up with a good group of mates. We represent where we’re from massively. I’ll definitely have a big crowd down there.”
Backed by family and friends who travel to support him at every show, he’s determined to put on a performance for them inside the octagon.
“It means a lot to represent them.”
Callan describes himself as adaptable.
“I can fight anywhere I need to. Southpaw, orthodox. I like to work my way up – head, body – pick my shots. Slip a few first, get loose, then I can make him look silly.”
Speed and precision are central to his game.
“From the footage I’ve seen, he looks game and comes out swinging. If he does that, I’ll get under those shots, work the body and open him up.”
Standing opposite Callan on March 14th is Doncaster’s own Riley Pipe.
Pipe is the home fighter and has already appeared on Caged Steel once before. While he may have less overall experience, he brings aggression, range and a high fight IQ into this contest. He knows the atmosphere. He knows the stage.
This sets up an intriguing clash. An unbeaten 5–0 boxer making his Caged Steel debut against a hungry local fighter who has already felt the lights and the crowd.
Callan promises entertainment.
“I’m bringing speed, power, everything you’ve got in boxing. A mixed style people are going to enjoy. I’ll put smiles on faces.”
He also had a short message for his opponent:
“Good luck. It’s going to be a long night.”
