The Caged Steel 39 fight card just got even more exciting as rising amateur MMA talent, Toby Aneni, is officially set to return to the cage on March 29th! Fans will remember his dominant performance last time out, where he secured a statement win, showcasing his favoured Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills and overall well-rounded game. Now, he’s back to prove he’s one to watch in the amateur ranks.
From Rugby to MMA – A Rapid Rise
At just 20 years old, Toby’s journey into martial arts is still fresh, but his impact has already been felt. His story began in 2022 when he attended a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu taster session at university. That single session ignited a passion that led him to train seriously in MMA, joining DNA MMA in York and McGovern Academy in Stoke-on-Trent when home from university.
Unlike many fighters who grow up in combat sports, Toby’s athletic background comes from rugby, a sport he still plays for the University of York. The physicality and competitive edge of rugby seem to have translated well into MMA, where his natural ability and relentless drive have fast-tracked his progression.
Motivated by Potential
Toby’s biggest motivation is his own potential. “This is something I know I’m good at,” he says. “Whether I win or lose, I’m always going to give my best.” That mindset, paired with his disciplined training and support from his gym, has seen him go from a complete novice to a legitimate amateur contender in just two years.

While he’s still developing his identity as a fighter, his strengths are clear – his ground game is tactical, and has a confident striking ability, this makes him a dangerous challenge for anyone in his division. His team at DNA MMA plays a crucial role in his growth, pushing him through tough training sessions and keeping him motivated, even on the hardest days.

Caged Steel 39 – Another Step Forward
With a current record of 3-1, Toby knows every fight is an opportunity to evolve, and he’s coming into Caged Steel 39 ready to showcase his improvements. His last performance on Caged Steel proved that he belongs on this stage, and fans can expect another high-level display when he steps into the cage on March 29th.
