DAN TEMPEST “AGAINST CHRIS HILL. THERE WILL BE FIREWORKS. IT WILL BE A FIGHT OF THE NIGHT PERFORMANCE”
Combat Vision MMA spoke to Asylum Vale Tudo fighter Dan Tempest as he prepares for his Caged Steel 18 fight against Chris Hill on Saturday 15th July 2017. Dan has won 5 out of his 11 amateur fights and various other titles around his local area.
Thank you for taking the time to speak to Combat Vision MMA, Dan. Could you tell us about the type of fighter you are.
“I’m an MMA fighter who fights out of AVT. I I have been at that gym for 3 years now. I moved to AVT in order to progress in MMA. I’m not the kind of person who just make up the numbers, if I’m doing something, I do it to the best of my ability. It was my first appearance on Caged Steel FC that was the catalyst to make the move, it highlighted what I needed to progress as a fighter”
Could you tell us about your preparation for a fight. What does a typical training camp consist of and how do your coaches formulate a strategy for you to work towards for an opponent.
“I train all year round, a fight camp is pretty standard for me. Cardio at 6am, then technical in the evenings and sparring once a week. The only major change is my diet, that’s the key to preparing for a fight”
“As for strategies and preparation, I try not to get too hung up on my opponent. I will have a brief look and my coaches will work on what they feel is an opponents weaknesses for me to exploit. But, ultimately if I do what I do right and fight my own fight, then that is what works best for me”
Could you tell us about how you deal with fight week.
“The week leading up to the fight, I’m pretty relaxed and I like to wind the training back a little bit and be more technically specific with whatever I feel I need to sharpen up on. I like to spend time with my family and try to keep as much normality as possible till fight day. Personally for me, if I spend too much time overthinking the fight, it becomes mentally draining and has a negative effect on my performance”
Could you tell us about your diet two months out from a fight.
“At 36 dropping weight is a lot harder than it used to be. I like to give myself every chance possible to make a weight cut easier. It’s not about eating less, it’s just about eating better and timing when you are eating certain things. I normally enter fight week approximately 87kg and then drop the rest by cutting carbs and the final bit in water on the day of the weigh in”
You are fighting Chris Hill at Caged Steel 18. He has commented to Combat Vision MMA that he believes this will be the most exciting fight on the card. Do you share this sentiment with Chris.
“This upcoming fight is one I’m particularly looking forward to as CSFC is one of my favourite shows. It will be nice to fight locally, instead of travelling around the north , fighting top draw opponents in their own back yard”
“Anyone that knows me will know I just like to have a good brawl. Don’t get me wrong the majority of my wins have come via submission and I love the grappling aspect of fighting. But, I also like to entertain and we all know the crowd loves nothing more than two lads going toe to toe. Chris clearly doesn’t mind this either, so there will be fireworks, I can’t wait to get in there and give another fight of the night performance”.
Caged Steel 18 will be your 12th amateur fight. Do you feel now is a good time to make the step up to the professional circuit.
“Overall, as a pretty experienced fighter, the way MMA is going, I believe the top level of amateur is as good as a lot of the professional fighters out there. I have absolute faith and trust in Danny to guide me in the right direction to further my career. The ultimate goal has been to test myself in the professional ranks”
